From Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria to the latest earthquake in Mexico City, the devastation in these areas can affect the residents in the short-term and in the long-term with regards to much needed tourism dollars. Once the clean up begins, what do you do if your travel plans have been affected? We thought this was the perfect time to talk about something you don’t think about until it’s often too late: travel insurance.
Do I need to buy travel insurance?
That’s a question every traveler should ask. The answer should always be, YES! Would you drive a car without insurance? Yeah, I didn’t think so.
In light of recent weather related disasters in the US and Caribbean, it was brought to my attention that over 80% of travelers do not purchase travel insurance. In a nutshell, this means you could be out the cost of your trip if you haven’t traveled. And if you are there during the emergency, extra expenses to get home or extend your stay. I don’t know about you, but I don’t have that kind of cash to throw around.
Travel Insurance: 4 Reasons To Always Have It
1. Medical Emergencies Happen
As a mom, I like to know my family is taken care of. This is no different when we travel. Travel insurance covers a wide range of things, from lost luggage, to rental car damage and emergency medical coverage. If traveling to the Caribbean or Internationally keep in mind they probably won’t take your insurance plan for medical care. If you have a pre-existing condition this is a no brainer.
2. Cost Is Minimal
When booking airfare, a cruise or even a hotel stay you will almost always be asked if you want to add insurance to protect your purchase. Most of the time the cost is between $75-$200 per person. If you just booked a $7,500 Disney vacation, adding insurance isn’t going to make that much of a difference. And, you will have peace of mind knowing your vacation is protected, should the unforeseen circumstances happen.
3. Transportation Fails
Can you guess the top two travel fails? If you guessed, missed or delayed flights and lost luggage you get a gold star. Sounds pretty minimal, until you are smack in the center of it all. Your travel insurance will help with all of that.
Have you ever seen your rental car go up in flames? My husband has, and thankfully travel insurance took care of it.
4. Accommodations- When They Aren’t Up To Par
You have arrived at your destination, you are ready for vacation to start, but you arrive at your hotel only to find broken windows, no air conditioning and bed bugs. Yeah, that’s a nightmare. And with travel insurance you won’t have to shell out a ton of money to change resorts.
Annual Plans For Frequent Travelers
As a travel writer I purchased an annual plan from Allianz Travel Insurance, and surprisingly the cost was minimal. An annual plan is great for those who travel last minute, travel with expensive gear, or travel on mission or church trips.
Read The Fine Print Before Buying
Make sure you can trust your travel insurance by thoroughly reading the fine print and understanding your coverage.
Are you seeing a common theme here? You cannot control the weather, the bad internet ad for a five star resort, or a ten hour flight delay and missed connections. But you can and will have peace of mind with your travel insurance in place.
