Fort Lauderdale Art Scene & Instagram Hot Spots

March 19, 2018 By Tara Settembre Leave a Comment

When you hear Florida art scene you might think of the city of Miami first, but nearby Fort Lauderdale is expanding the sunshine state’s arts and culture offering too. More than a beach destination, the greater Fort Lauderdale area now encompasses a mix of art galleries, museums, bohemian street art, and trendy restaurants without the price or crowds of Miami.

Below are some must-see spots for art lovers, foodies and those looking to blow up their Instagram feed with eye-catching urban backdrops.

Fort Lauderdale Instagram Worthy Art Sites

Fort Lauderdale Instagram Hot Spots and Guide to Fort Lauderdale's Art Scene

Downtown Hollywood Mural Project

While not as big as Wynwood Walls, you’ll be able to find parking here at least as you take in a bite and pose in front of large-scale street art. I enjoyed the funky vibe and following the Downtown Hollywood Mural Project map to discover the different murals. My favorite being this Mona Lisa one.

NSU Art Museum

Originating in 1958, this 75,000-square-foot modernist building is both welcoming and accessible. The exhibits are always rotating, but we got to take in the colorful works of Frank Stella and listen to a lecture in their auditorium on Chihuly. Also worth noting is the museum’s director and chief curator is Bonnie Clearwater, an influential leader who played a major role in Miami’s emergence and development as an international arts center.

Art Walk

The last Saturday of the month (except December) food trucks, street performances, local vendors, live music, interactive exhibitions and more come together on the streets and in the galleries of FATVillage from 6 to 11 p.m.

Art Fair on the Water

For a true one-of-a-kind experience visit Fort Lauderdale in January and grab tickets to the Art Fair on the Water. Housed in vacant multimillion-dollar homes along the waterway, you can only access these pop-up art displays via water taxi or private yachts. It combines boating, art and interior design all in one! While touring jaw-dropping homes, you can take in works from Picasso and new up and coming artists too. What an experience and super chic too! Purchase tickets at artftlauderdale.com.

Girl’s Club Foundation Warehouse

The mission of Girls’ Club is to educate the public, nurture the careers of female artists, and to serve as a resource for art students and scholars, curators and practicing artists on the contributions of women to the field of contemporary art. A special commitment is made to expose the work of local artists to a broader national and international audience. 723 NE 2 Avenue. TIP: Next door’s Montce Swim shop boutique is worth visiting too.

Instagrammable Fort Lauderdale Restaurants and Bars

Funky Buddha Brewery

This craft brewery is HUGE and chill. Located in the heart of Oakland Park’s new Culinary Arts District, the 110,000 sq-ft facility is South Florida’s largest craft microbrewery. They offer tours of the facility, scratch-made grub, and dozens of beers on tap daily.

Wreck Bar

For a unique dining experience, head to the famous Wreck Bar inside the B Ocean Resort. This historic destination is one of the few places in the world where you can enjoy the beauty of mermaids performing a burlesque underwater show from a porthole view while enjoying a tropical cocktail and dining on fresh seafood. Made famous in the film Analyze This, this show has been around since the Rat Pack days and is a fun kitsch night out. See for yourself in my Mermaid Show Aqua Burlesque Facebook Live video.

One Door East

Chef Jeremy Bearman created a global tapas menu in collaboration with owner and Chef Giovanni Rocchio. His cuisine has been well received in South Florida, and is featured in many rave media reviews. The inside decor is hip and trendy and the food is delicious. His menu has me loving Brussel Sprouts now!

FATVillage

The downtown historic warehouse district, is burgeoning with productivity, coffee shops and art galleries.  Techies, artists, designers, and creative professionals call the four block district home. A must-see spot is there is BREW Urban Cafe Next Door – combining my love for tea and books, I couldn’t stop photographing this hidden gem. TIP: Go to the bathroom before you leave BREW, it’s decorated kray! Graffiti walls can be found out back too. Also, railroad tracks run behind the coffee shop, which is great for that rustic look.

Boatyard

This seafood restaurant has an amazing high-ceiling chandelier made of oars that my iPhone couldn’t do justice too. Boatyard’s 80-seat dockside patio lounge provides a prime view of the scenic Intracoastal. It’s the perfect setting to grab a bite or drinks in the company of friends while enjoying an afternoon or evening watching the boats cruise by. Add to that an open kitchen and expansive raw bar cart that is worth a stop for lunch or dinner.

Best Flip Flops for Summer Travel

June 8, 2017 By Susan Pazera Leave a Comment

The summer season is upon us and you know what that means?!! Time to break out the flip flops and let our toes bask in the glorious sunshine!  As travelers we look for two things when it comes to our flip flops…Comfort and Style. We need them to be comfortable enough to wear wandering around cities and countrysides and we also need them to be stylish enough to wear with shorts or capris during the day or with a pretty skirt or sundress for a night on the town. The She’s On The Go team rounded up some our favorites to give you our recommendations for the best flip flops to wear on your travels this summer:

Fadra loves FitFlops

Fit Flop

I’ve been hearing about FitFlops for years, or at least since 2006 when FitFlop founder Marcia Kilgore set her mind on a mission – to create the most comfortable footwear in the world. When I found them on clearance at my local Marshalls, I decided to take a chance on these high-end flip flops and I’m so glad I did. Using their patent-pending, original MICROWOBBLEBOARD midsole technology, the multi-density EVA sole fuses three diagonal sections into a single, seamless, underfoot platform to help absorb shock, diffuse underfoot pressure, and make your feet feel amazing!

What I loved about the FitFlop Women’s Lulu Metallic Snake Flip-Flops (which is what I actually bought) is that they had enough “bling” that I could look stylish wearing them with shorts or jeans and still look casually elegant when I wore them with summer dresses. And they are super comfortable with just the right amount of support.

How do I know all this? They were my go-to flip-flops on my recent cruise on the Carnival Vista!

Susan Loves the Reef Dreams and the Merrell Terran Convertible II

I’m all about comfort and my go-to Flip Flops for travel (and everyday wear too) are super comfortable and casual. The Reef Dreams Flip Flops really are a dream to walk in.
Your feet feel like they’re treading on a soft pillowy mattress all while giving you just the right amount of arch support. The Merrell Terran Convertible II has breathable mesh and nubuck leather that keep your feet cool and looking stylish. Both of these are perfect for wearing with a maxi skirt and a cute T-shirt!

Julie Loves the Sanuk Yoga Sling 2 Flip Flop

I love Sanuk’s yoga mat flip flops and recently bought of pair of these slings. They have a bunch of different colors to choose from and they can be worn with pretty much anything! AND, they are super comfy!!

Andrea Loves the Reef Men’s Smoothy Sandal

I have yet to find a shoe that is as comfortable as the Reef Men’s Smoothy Sandal. Yes, I said Men’s! Don’t be fooled into the women’s version. They are WAY too narrow and not nearly as comfy as the Men’s version.

Cam Loves the HO’ŌPIO LEATHER by OluKai

You’ll have your HO’ŌPIO’s  forever and your feet will thank you every day you wear them. Living in San Diego, I live in these and can walk miles in them. Heavenly. I need to be a paid rep for them since I rave about them to anyone who will listen! Also, my kids and husband wear them too!

Bonus Recommendation Birkenstock Mayari

Although the Birkenstock Mayari‘s are on the pricey side, they are worth every dime. The contoured cork footbed gives great arch support. The sole is cushioned and provides shock absorption. I traipsed all over Italy in them last summer and my feet were never sore. These sandals actually look better the older they are because the leather softens and gets a beautiful natural patina as they age.

Do you have a favorite flip flop, sandal, or shoe that you wear while out on your summer adventures? Let us know in the comments, we are always on the look-out for foot friendly flip flops!

How to Become a Savvy Fashionista at Disney Springs

February 22, 2017 By Fadra Nally 2 Comments

Shopping at Disney Springs

What would you do if someone gave you $250 and told you spend it in four hours or less?

Sounds like a fashionista’s dream come true and pretty easy to do. You could easily walk into one store and spend it all in a heartbeat.

But for a savvy fashionista, like myself, I consider the real challenge to be making the most out of the $250.

While most people don’t think of spending the afternoon shopping while on vacation, let alone on a Disney vacation, that’s exactly what I did recently, armed with a $250 gift card in my hands to be used at Disney’s newly reimagined shopping and dining district, Disney Springs.

I’ve traveled to Disney Springs, eaten and shopped at Disney Springs, and even stayed at one of the Disney-affiliated hotels within walking distance of Disney Springs. But I didn’t realize how much it had changed and how much it had to offer to a savvy fashionista until I set out to spend that $250 gift card.

Knowing Where to Shop at Disney Springs

Disney Springs is broekn up into four main sections:

West Side – Located appropriately enough at the west end of Disney Springs , it’s home to attractions like Cirque du Soleil, Splitsville Bowling, and the AMC Theatre, along with assorted restaurants and a few fun shops like the Super Hero Headquarters offering tons of Marvel merchandise.

Town Center – A new section devoted exclusively to the fashionista with high end stores like Free People, Anthropologie, Vince Camuto, and Kate Spade New York.

The Landing – Situated closest to the water,  you’ll find attractions like the hot air balloon, aquacars, waterside restaurants, and more beachy-themed stores like Havaianas, Chapel Hats, and Apex by Sunglass Hut.

Marketplace – If you’re at Disney and shopping for Disney merchandise, it makes sense that you would find it at Disney Springs! In fact, you’ll find some of the best Disney merchandise at places like The Art of Disney, Tren-D, and the Marketplace Co-op (one of my favorites)

So where would you head if you were looking to make the most of your money? How about ALL OF THE ABOVE!

Scoring big at Town Center

After meandering through West Side, I stumbled across the newest section of Disney Springs called Town Center. Holy upscale mall!

I was suddenly surrounded by stores I knew and loved as well as stores that I wanted to know and love! The only problem was price. These were not inexpensive stores. But I put my savvy fashionista hat on to see what I could find.

Shopping at Sugarboo - Disney Springs

First stop was Sugarboo & Co. which offered an eclectic mix of accessories and home decor.

While I didn’t purchase anything at Sugarboo, the store across the way caught my eye, mainly because the sign out front announced 60% off all clearance items! I was sure that Lucky Brand had something waiting for me inside.

Lucky Brand - Disney Springs

After trying on several shirts and skirts, I settled on a red shirt and played around with the clearance jewelry until I found the piece I could live without. (Read on to find out what I chose!)

Lucky Brand finds - Disney Springs

Although I planned to stick to clothing, I happened to see one of my favorite cosmetics stores, Origins, and I happened to see that they were offering 20% off everything in the store!

Origins sale - Disney Springs

It just so happens that Origins carries the only eye shadow I’ll wear and with 20% off I splurged on a new shade (it’s the little cream jars in the back – I highly recommend them if you have problems with eyeshadow that creases!)

Origins - Disney Springs

Then I headed into unfamiliar territory. After passing by these younger-than-me stores in places like Washington, DC and NY, I headed into Superdry and Uniqlo. Caution: the women’s clothing are generally sized for little Japanese girls so you may have to size up.

Superdry - Disney Springs

At this point, I was well on my way to spending the $250 but I had a few stores in mind in The Landing that I knew would complete me. I mean, complete my shopping.

Fashion favorites in The Landing

Even though it was the middle of February, it was warm enough to wear some of my summer gear and as I was walking around in my favorite pair of black Sanuks, I was reminded that there’s a Sanuk store in The Landing.

A quick browse and I walked out a with a new pair that I knew would fit and would be stylishly comfortable.

And lest you think that I travel to Disney without any regard for Disney fashion, I found exactly what I was looking for at Alex and Ani.

BB8 bracelet from Alex and Ani - Disney Springs

I don’t have a massive collection of Alex and Ani bracelets but I am particular about which bracelets I like. I chose Raphaelian Silver (the only metal I wear) with a BB8 charm. I only like charms but they have plenty of medallion bracelets as well. And BB8 is from Star Wars so technically I was showing my Disney side.

Clothes, shoes, accessories – there couldn’t possibly be anything more, right? I was almost done. But I hadn’t hit Marketplace yet.

Finishing out the day at Marketplace

At this point, I was starving. When you’re really in the zone, you don’t realize how hungry you are.  Although I chose a lovely salad, I could have just as easily enjoyed a Sprinkles cupcake overlooking the water at Disney Springs.

Sprinkles cupcakes - Disney Springs

Once I had recharged, it was off to visit World of Disney and the Marketplace Co-op, two of my favorite places for Disney-themed merchandise. Even if you’re out of money, it’s a great place to look around. Look at what I spotted!

Vintage travel fashion - Disney Springs

Fashion for men - Disney Springs

That dapper looking man is Walt Disney, himself, the inspiration for Twenty Eight & Main offering menswear

And believe it or not, I found one of my new favorite pairs of pants at World of Disney. There’s a subtle Mickey Mouse embroidered near the pocket but otherwise, I’d look good enough for any non-theme park function.

So how did I do?

It took me almost four hours to complete my task. I’m a savvy shopper but I guess not a quick one.

So the next time you arrive at Disney but your luggage doesn’t? Use it as an excuse to spend the day shopping at Disney Springs!

Savvy fashion at Disney Springs

Here’s everything this savvy fashionista scored at Disney Springs:

  • Red Lace Front Peasant top from Lucky Brand, $22.00
  • Pebble Double Drop earrings from Lucky Brand, $12.00
  • Khaki Capris from World of Disney, $37.56
  • Yoga Slings from Sanuk, $38.00
  • Indigo Script shirt from Superdry, $14.50
  • Full Zip hoodie from Uniqlo, $29.90
  • Leggings from Uniqlo, $9.90
  • BB8 Rafaelian Silver bracelet from Alex and Ani, $31.96
  • GinZing Brightening Eye Shadow from Origins, $16.00
  • Make A Difference Hand Cream from Origins, $18.40

GRAND TOTAL: $245.19 (including sales tax)

This shopping trip was part of a social media challenge for the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration. Disney provided me with a $250 gift card to spend at Disney Springs.
